Meograph


This is one of my favorite tools.  I am surprised I haven't seen anyone writing about it. Meograph is a presentation tool that incorporates Google Maps, slides and a timeline to present a story. It uses images, video, and sound to tell the story. Very easy to start using, just enter when, where and what happened for each slide. Then add media.

  • Students enter information and pictures about an historical event to help them to remember dates and events by doing, and also can review the slides later.
    Students can view a slideshow about Lewis and Clark’s expedition then analyze the maps in the presentation to understand the distances travelled, as well as the landforms or water bodies crossed for geographical as well as historical data.
  • It can help them to understand the chain of events and repercussions of the civil war by evaluating events, dates and length of time between each event.
  • They can create a presentation or biography about an historical event or person

Formative Assessment, Feedback and Technology




I've been learning about "formative assessment" and feedback in my graduate assessment class and it occurred to me that technology is perfect for formative assessment and it's corresponding feedback. 


What is formative assessment?  It's something teachers have been doing forever, but now it has a name. 
Formative assessment is gathering evidence of learning by asking questions, observing and giving feedback to students to change both their understanding and to give information to the teacher about what needs to be retaught or what in the curriculum needs to be redesigned.  As opposed to summative assessment, where the feedback is after the fact, formative assessment incorporates immediate, or almost immediate, feedback to the students, so they can revise their work before they end up going in the wrong direction. 

Technology can help give feedback to students in a number of ways.  The interactive quizzes that can be done on a computer, tablet or interactive white board can give immediate feedback to the students on the accuracy of their answers.  Many of the apps or activities will not move on until the student gives the correct answer, or they at least tell them what the correct answer is, and also may tell them why an answer is incorrect.  


But I am also referring to the personal interactivity between the teacher and the student.  In a creative writing class for example, the teacher may not be able to read every student's journal and get comments back to the student during class.  But if they were using a blogging tool to write their journal, the teacher could read and comment on it soon after it is published.  Then the student can read the comment as soon as they can get onto the Internet, either later at school, or at home later that day, if they have Internet access.  Many kids have phones or tablets that access the Internet as well.  The blog site could even send an email notification of the comment, if that option is set up.  


As we venture further into the 21st century, we need to employ 21st century skills.  The argument that it engages the students is one good reason for using technology in school.  But it also can help streamline the teacher's work and improve communication between the student and the teacher.

Social Networking and Education



Social networking, according to Dictionary.com, means “the development of social and professional contacts; the sharing of information and services among people with a common interest.”
The term social networking carries some negative connotations due to sites like Facebook and MySpace, and recent stories in the news, but used properly, it can be an effective way for students to learn from their peers or others.  Kids can Skype with kids from other countries to learn about their culture.  They can share information via blogs, chats, Tweets, or instant messages.  They can create videos or presentations and publish them on the Internet, sharing information and creativity with others. They can use Google Drive or wikis to collaborate on a project, all working on the same document at the same time. 
The Internet, contains a lot of misinformation, but it is also a wealth of accurate information, if you know how to use it properly.  As Michelle Davis says, in her 2010 article in Education Week, Social Networking Goes to School, students feel at home online.  Davis reports that 73% of American teens are already using social networking sites.  She writes about a teacher in Florida, Sylvia Tolisano, who set up a social networking site called “Around the World with 80 Schools” using a networking tool called a ning.  Sylvia gathered 300 teachers and students on one site to share information about their home countries.  Our mission is to teach kids the skills they need to navigate the Internet safely and project a positive online image.

Live Binders




LiveBinders is a web tool that allows you to save websites, notes, photos, video, scans... anything digital... into a well organized online binder.    Binders can be made private or public.  

The unique feature is the tabs.  You create your tabs (as in a 3 ring binder) to organize your pages just by clicking on one and giving it a name.  You can also have sub-tabs under each tab.  It also allows you to create different shelves for even more categorizing.

LiveBinders can be used as reference books, for taking notes, or even for creating electronic portfolios.  They save space - do away with all those paper binders, notebooks, journals and idea folders. Uploads and links can be combined into a single binder for saving lesson plan ideas.  You can share binders with others for collaborating on a project. If you add the "LiveBinder It" bookmarklet to your web browser's (i.e., Internet Explorer) bookmarks or favorites toolbar, you can save a web page directly to your LiveBinder with one click (well, maybe 3 clicks).

See the LiveBinder tutorial for more info.  Your binders can be shared through email, twitter, Facebook and you can put them in your website or blog. Binders can be presented to an audience, like a PowerPoint presentation.  There is also a free iPad app that allows access to your binders.

My Second Graduate Class in Technology Integration

I recently finished my second graduate class in my Masters in Education in Technology Integration.  Yes, another technology class!  This one was similar to the first, but this time we created a wiki.  I was excited to have this project, because I had never created a wiki, so this was going to be a learning opportunity.  We also shared tools with our class members, and I learned about many tools that I had not known about.  The following blog posts will introduce some of these tools, as well as others I have come across and tested. 

The second class was even more fun than the first.  I also learned to create a Prezi presentation.  We discussed digital portfolios for students, created lessons for use with Interactive White Boards, and used a class wiki to share information, as well as create our own individual technology wikis.  I will add more information about these and more tools to future blog posts.

Technology Integration: What I've Learned.



My first graduate class in integrating technology into education was very interesting.  This blog post will attempt to share some of what I learned.  I had heard the term Web 2.0, but really did not know what it all entailed.  Web 2.0 is the second generation of the Internet. Instead of being a passive reader of the Internet, Web 2.0 tools allow people to add, edit, and share their own creations on the Internet (Schrum and Levin, 2009).  Users can communicate and collaborate instantaneously on the net, using tools like Google Docs, wikis, blogs and podcasts.  Users can share information, pictures, and documents, some of which can be edited by several people simultaneously.  Tools like VoiceThread (see post below) allow users to share and discuss presentations, pictures, as well as ideas.  A tool called a Ning allows people to create their own social networks and share information about a common topic.  Blogs, like this one, allow a person to share ideas and information with anyone who has access to the site.  You Tube, and other sites, allows people to share videos, which have had a huge impact on our world news recently, or help people to learn how to do almost anything!  There are many educational tutorials on YouTube, including some on how to use Web 2.0 technology. The variety of tools available also allows teachers to reach all students with different learning styles.  Web 2.0, therefore, is a beneficial tool for teachers to use, in the classroom or outside of the classroom as supplementary instruction or review, along with their other teaching tools.  There are also alternative technologies and universal design tools that help all children, but specifically those with disabilities, to succeed in school.  Multiple ways of accessing the computer, for those with motor difficulties, for example, or technology that aids struggling learners with reading, writing and mathematics, are other forms of 21st century educational technology.  Many products, Dragon or Clicker6 for example, allow alternative input or feedback to the student.  Many of them can be modified to suit the educational level of the student.
Marc Prensky has written and spoken extensively on this subject of 21st Century education.  In his article “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” (2001), he calls the current generation of students “digital natives” because they have been inundated with technology from the time they were born.  Because of this, he asserts that they “think and process information differently” (Prensky, 2001, n.p.) than previous generations did. Seventy-five percent of members of the generation known as the Millennial generation, those born between the early 1980’s and 2000, have a Facebook account, and a majority of them use the Internet for information or entertainment (Schrum and Levin, 2009).  We need to use these tools to reach our plugged-in students.  Experts suggest a learner centered education, as opposed to the old lecture format.  As Schrum and Levin put it, “teaching is not just telling” (p.12).   I have always believed that children need to learn facts, but they also need to learn HOW to learn, meaning how to find information and become lifelong learners.  They need to have authentic learning experiences, which they can obtain by interacting with students and people from other states and countries over the Internet.
But that does not mean sending them on to the Internet to surf randomly at their will.  There are tools and standards that teachers can use to design lessons and curriculum based around using the Internet.  Interestingly, when I started teaching office and publishing computer skills ten years ago, and was trying to develop a curriculum, there were no state standards for what we were expected to teach.  There were some guidelines.  Today there are state standards for Information and Communication Technology, as well as student, teacher and administrator standards from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).  Common Core standards have technology interwoven into the core subject standards.  There are also safeguards and protocol that must be integrated.  There are sites mainly for education, like Edublogs.org and Edmodo, which are alternatives to other blog sites or social networking sites.  Many of these sites have controls in place that allow the teachers to control who is able to access the sites as well as moderate posts (in case there is anything personal or offensive being shared) .  The WebQuest, developed by Bernie Dodge and Tom March, at SDSU, is a tool that allows teachers to organize and specify which sites their students are to use to complete their projects.  For more info on WebQuests, see http://webquest.org/index.php.  Of course teaching students about Internet safety and Netiquette are also important prerequisites and ongoing learning experiences.  Educational bookmarking sites, like Evernote.com and Delicious.com, among others, allow students to organize and save information for project reports, as well as share that information with their peers, when working on a group project.  Some may also be effective for saving student work in a portfolio, which is also a requirement by some state education departments.
Lastly, there are many roadblocks to integrating technology into education.  First, education for the teachers is an important part of 21st century education.  There are so many products and tools available, but if the teachers are not trained to use them, they may not use them.  Teachers need to research and learn how to use the tools before implementing them. The TPAK model shows how content, pedagogy, and technology all combine to develop a framework for integrating technology into education (Koehler, M. and Mishra, P., 2006).  It is important for teachers to seek out professional development opportunities, and 21st century websites like ISTE and Classroom20.com (a Ning site) provide those opportunities.  There are also concerns about privacy and protection of our children. Laws like CIPA and COPPA, FERPA and possibly HIPPA constrain use of the Internet in education. Some districts block everything to ensure compliance with these laws, but we need to find ways to comply with the laws and ensure online safety without limiting the ability of teachers and students to use the web to expand their educational possibilities.

Equal Access to the Digital World!

"Communication is a key function of life."  I heard that quote on a video about Universal Design today.  This is why UDL exists in education and elsewhere; and why everyone should have access to the digital world to communicate with others online.  

The world is going more digital everyday.  By the time the kids, who are in school now, graduate, it is likely that all interactions will be online, from banking and shopping to books and communications.  People with disabilities need to be able to access computers and mobile devices to stay in touch with the world and to complete necessary tasks.  There are many alternative technology devices that can help people with disabilities to access their digital devices, from switches to adaptive and onscreen keyboards, as well as software that helps with word prediction and spelling.  Digital cameras are used for eye gaze control of digital input and scanning software moves the cursor which is activated by a switching device to enable people who cannot control a mouse or keyboard.  There are even switch interfaces that use bluetooth technology to enable a user to access mobile devices via a switch. Whether a disability is lifelong, or occurs later in life, Universal Design is essential for everyone.
